The Escorts and Sex Workers Alliance is shocked by the news that the Cabinet has approved a Sexual Offences Bill that will regulate the purchase of sexual services in Ireland.

European Escorts Sex Workers Rights Committee Director said: “People who buy sexual services put our safety at risk and are at risk of violence. The Cabinet has just approved a law that, if passed, will put our lives at risk. In effect, they convey that our rights and safety are not valued.
They have done this without any independent research into the impact of sex or any meaningful consultation with actual Escorts sex workers. We have repeatedly told the Minister for Justice and the Irish Government that we do not want sex; we want our human rights and safety to be protected. Why don’t they listen to us? The bill goes against international best practices and advice from experts such as Amnesty International and the World Health Organization, which instead advocate for a human rights-based harm reduction and decriminalization approach to laws and regulations.

The escorts said, “How can we feel safe and protected from violence when the police who are supposed to protect us are watching us and forcing us to act alone?” It gets even worse when we buy sexual services. The government’s proposed bill will create an environment where there will be even more attacks and violence against women who are sex workers. “

Do they think they know more about the impact and consequences of sex on sex workers’ rights than Amnesty International and sex workers themselves? Let me be clear that this bill will do nothing for workers. They can still be prosecuted for running a brothel just because they worked with other people for safety reasons. We cannot ignore ourselves. We will fight this with all our might.”
